Moms are Women First
I know that moms are women first. I also know how easy that is to forget.
Whenever someone asks my "occupation", I tell them that I am a stay at home mom.
I love being able to dedicate myself to raising my children. I know that not all mothers
are blessed with that opportunity.
Moms who have a career could answer that question a little differently.
"I am a secretary" or "I am teacher". Whatever her occupation may be.
Sometimes we get caught up with "what we do" and it becomes our identity. We forget that moms are women first.
Being a mom is stressful.
Anyone who says otherwise is either super-human or has never experienced motherhood.
I would imagine your day is similar to mine:
- Wake up by 6:00 am (so I have time to exercise and shower before my children demand my time).
- 7:00 - change diapers, and get all three girls dressed (one is my niece)
- 7:30 - make breakfast
- 8:00 - get teeth brushed/hair fixed
- 8:15 - break up a fight
- 8:17 - clean up from breakfast
- 8:25 - break up another fight
- 8:45 - change more diapers
- 9:00 - 1:00pm "lather, rinse, and repeat"
...so my day goes on! I have a three year old, a 16 month old, and on top of that I'm
crazy enough to babysit my niece, who is 18 months old. It's like having twins, now that is work!
(Praise to the mom who can do that with her sanity intact.)
But then, at one o'clock, my reprieve comes in. The girls lay down for their nap!
I have an hour to myself.
This is my time to remember that I am a woman. I read a book, write emails, make a phone
call to a friend. Or, if I'm tired enough, take a snooze.
The point is that those precious moments that you spend on yourself
can reduce your stress level; in turn making you a better mom.
You feel refreshed and ready to take on the challenge of motherhood for the rest of the day.
You should also know that stress not only affects you emotionally (with depression). It shows up in all aspects
of your life. Mentally, it changes your ability to focus and get things accomplished.
Physically, it can cause pain and disease.
So why can't you focus, or why is your neck so tight?
You need to find a way to reduce that stress.
If cutting back on something is the answer, then do so. If that is not possible, you need to find something to help you remember that moms are women first.
